This June, Harpeth High School opened its doors to a lively cohort of 75 youngsters from Kingston Springs, Pegram and Bellevue, who gathered for the school’s annual Youth Basketball Camp.
Coaching talent on the sidelines
Former varsity players from the school’s own roster volunteered as mentors, guiding the campers through drills that stressed proper technique, teamwork and the joy of the game.
At the heart of the instruction was Lathan Turner, the camp’s lead instructor, who highlighted the importance of defensive positioning, spatial awareness and the development of genuine relationships between the older players and the children.
A community‑building experience
The program was deliberately inclusive, welcoming children of all ages and aiming not only to sharpen basketball skills but also to cultivate a supportive atmosphere where confidence could grow.
Beyond the court, the camp served as a conduit for local families to connect, reinforcing a sense of belonging that extends beyond the final buzzer.
Organizers noted that the positive feedback from participants suggests the camp will continue to be a staple of the region’s summer activities, offering a blueprint for future youth sports initiatives.
