A Historic Gem Gets the Spotlight
On the evening of May 21, the Manistee Parks Commission will convene a special session in the council chambers of Manistee City Hall, located at 70 Maple Street. The gathering, set to begin at 5:30 p.m., promises a deep dive into one of the city’s oldest green spaces.
Rietz Park, nestled on the southeast side of Manistee and bounded by Vine, Forest, Park and Main streets, offers a blend of recreational facilities that have served residents for more than a century. Picnic tables, a children’s playscape, a basketball court and a baseball field make the park a hub for families, athletes and casual visitors alike.
The land that comprises Rietz Park was officially donated to the municipality on August 5, 1908, a gift that has endured through changing seasons and community needs. Over the decades, the space has evolved, yet its core purpose — providing a communal venue for leisure and sport — remains unchanged.
Mark Fedder, executive director of the Manistee County Historical Museum, will take the podium at 6 p.m. to deliver a presentation titled “Rietz Park: A History.” Fedder, who has overseen numerous archival projects for the museum, will weave together archival photographs, oral histories and municipal records to paint a vivid picture of the park’s development.
The public is warmly invited to attend the talk, which will be followed by a brief question-and-answer period. Attendees will learn about the park’s role in local culture, its impact on neighborhood identity and the ongoing efforts to preserve its legacy for future generations.
Beyond its historical significance, Rietz Park continues to host the Manistee Saints baseball team, a community staple that draws fans from across the region. The field’s presence underscores the park’s dual function as both a recreational venue and a cultural landmark.
For those seeking additional details, the city’s official website — accessible at manisteemi.gov — provides comprehensive information about the meeting, the park’s amenities and upcoming civic events.
