Summer Grind
The Griffins are deep into a busy summer schedule, using practice sessions and tournaments to lay the groundwork for a season that could mirror their 28‑7 campaign a year ago. Coach Jeff Oller repeatedly stresses that the summer months are the most critical period for building chemistry, honing defensive principles and sharpening shooting mechanics.
Competing in the Southwestern Illinois College summer league and a series of regional shootouts, the team has already posted wins over traditional Southwestern Conference powerhouses Edwardsville and O’Fallon. Those victories provide a early barometer for a squad that must replace several key contributors from the previous roster.
A Young Core Rises
Only two starters return: junior guard Layla Tobin and sophomore guard Elle Willenborg. Tobin brings a defensive edge, averaging 2.8 steals per game last season, while Willenborg contributed 8.7 points and a team‑high 57 three‑pointers. Their growth will be essential as the team integrates a largely inexperienced frontcourt.
The departure of leading scorer Zoe Oller leaves a sizable offensive void, but the coaching staff sees an opportunity to distribute scoring more evenly. The Griffins are focusing on improving defensive cohesion, aiming to keep opponents under the 33‑point threshold that defined their success a year ago, and on increasing their three‑point efficiency after knocking down 223 treys previously.
Beyond the court, the program benefits from the support of the Father McGivney community and the guidance of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, both of which provide resources and developmental opportunities that help the team maintain its competitive edge.
