When Major League Baseball’s Statcast system first went live, it promised a new level of insight into the sport’s most fundamental actions. Today, the platform tracks everything from the speed of a pitch to the exact angle at which a ball leaves a bat, turning raw observations into quantifiable data that can be analyzed game after game.

Statcast defines a hard‑hit ball as any contact that leaves the bat at 95 mph or faster. When a batted ball carries spin that contributes to movement, Statcast labels it Active Spin. Translating xwOBA onto the traditional ERA scale yields xERA, a metric that lets fans compare a pitcher’s expected performance to his actual ERA.

Running Impact: Jump and Bolt

Outfielders are evaluated with a metric called Jump, which captures reaction time and route efficiency, while baserunners earn a Bolt when their sprint speed reaches 30 ft/sec or higher. These numbers highlight the importance of speed in turning routine plays into game‑changing moments.
