Florida’s 2027 recruiting class received a significant lift when three-star defensive lineman Cain Van Norden announced his commitment to the University of Florida. The 6-foot-7-inch, 265-pound athlete from Bishop McNamara High School in District Heights, Maryland, chose the Gators over a slate of suitors that included Maryland, Ole Miss, Syracuse and Michigan State.
Van Norden’s decision comes at a moment when Florida’s coaching staff, led by first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, is enjoying a surge of momentum. In recent weeks the program has added several blue-chip prospects, including four-star running back Andrew Beard and four-star offensive tackle Elijah Hutchenson, signaling a strategic shift that is attracting top talent.
The defensive lineman is ranked No. 94 at his position by the 247Sports composite and holds the No. 825 overall spot nationally, while Rivals places him at No. 79 in his category. He also boasts 19 standing offers, three of which come from other SEC programs, underscoring the competitive nature of his recruitment.
Van Norden’s game is defined by a blend of size, agility and versatility. A dual-sport athlete, he has excelled in both football and basketball, a combination that has drawn praise from analysts who see his footwork and timing as assets on the defensive line. His commitment was widely expected to favor Virginia Tech and Ole Miss, but Florida’s persistent recruiting effort ultimately secured his signature.
