A New Era for Mustangs Baseball
Wade Atchley, a veteran coach with more than three decades of experience in the Millbrook community, has been named the new head baseball coach for Stanhope Elmore. He spent the last six seasons as an assistant with the Mustangs, building relationships with players, parents and local supporters.
Atchley’s connection to the area dates back to 1994, when he first arrived in Millbrook. Over the years he has coached numerous athletes who later starred on the 2006 state championship team, including his own son. He often reflects on the influence of legendary figures such as Mickey McCullough, Rick Samsal and the late Hank Furlow, whose traditions continue to shape the program. Joe Mason, a longtime community pillar, has witnessed those changes firsthand.

Atchley follows in the footsteps of coaches like Mickey McCullough, Rick Samsal and Hank Furlow, each of whom left an indelible mark on the program. His son was also a member of the 2006 championship squad, underscoring the deep family ties that bind the team to its history.
Returning Talent and Playoff Hopes
The Mustangs will lose several key seniors from the previous season, but a talented core returns. Pitchers Cooper Mitchell and Davis Foshee, catcher Tristen Wilson, and infielders Noah Allen and Braden Smith are expected to lead the charge.
Since 2022 the team has enjoyed a successful postseason run, and Atchley believes the blend of experience and youthful energy can produce another deep playoff run. He stresses that the program is built on the values inherited from past coaches, including the guidance of Scott and Bubba Adams, who have also contributed to its growth.
Community Service and Tradition
Beyond the diamond, Atchley is committed to community service. In partnership with the Millbrook Men’s Club, the team will distribute meals on July 3 and 4, reinforcing a tradition of giving back that has defined the program for years.
