A Hidden Treasure in a Tin Box
A Michigan woman recently opened a modest tin box in her late brother's storage unit in Omaha, Nebraska, and uncovered a trove of rare 1933 Goudey baseball cards that had been gathering dust for decades.
Among the cards were four iconic Babe Ruth specimens, alongside Hall of Famers such as Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott, Lou Brown, Nap Lajoie, Eddie Collins, Jimmie Foxx, Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby, forming a near‑complete set from the most celebrated baseball issue of the 1930s.
Initially assuming the cards were mere junk, she brought the collection to Legends Sports & Games in Kentwood, Michigan, where appraisers quickly recognized their significance and estimated the lot at more than $100,000.
The unexpected valuation has prompted the Kentwood retailer to launch a campaign urging owners of forgotten memorabilia to examine attics, basements and storage lockers, suggesting that hidden treasures may be waiting to be discovered.
The story underscores how a simple act of sorting through old belongings can reveal pieces of sports history, linking a modest family archive to the broader narrative of baseball's golden era.
