A Platform for Future Stars
Forty-seven high school baseball players representing 32 distinct tribes from 19 states and Canada converged on Truist Park for the fifth edition of the Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase, an initiative spearheaded by the Atlanta Braves.
The weekend featured a pro-style workout on Saturday, where prospects displayed their raw talent in front of scouts, followed by an all-star game on Sunday that pitted the best of the bunch against one another.
Guiding the youngsters were former Major League veterans — Pete Smith, Jerome Walton, Bruce Benedict and Ron Jackson — who served as coaches and mentors throughout the competition.
TrackMan Baseball, a sports-analytics platform, recorded every swing and pitch, providing detailed statistics that underscored the athletes’ measurable performance.
Cody Two Bulls, a 12th‑grader and catcher from the Oglala Sioux Tribe in Rapid City, South Dakota, described the event as unlike anything he had experienced, noting that the moment carried deep pride for his community and signaled a long‑awaited recognition.
Emiliano Garcia, a third‑baseman from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Cherokee, North Carolina, said he intends to bring the lessons learned back to his own teammates, hoping to inspire the next generation of tribal athletes.
Mike Stopp, executive director of the Native American Athletic Foundation, highlighted that access remains a critical barrier for many tribal players, while Greg McMichael, a Braves alumnus and senior director of alumni relations, emphasized that the Braves are the only Major League club currently hosting such a showcase.
The event also served as a forum for families and mentors to discuss pathways to college and professional baseball, reinforcing the notion that the showcase is as much about future opportunities as it is about celebrating heritage.
