A Road Course Triumph
Shane van Gisbergen dominated the NASCAR Cup Series road course event at Sonoma Raceway, leading 74 of the final 83 laps before crossing the finish line in first place. The New Zealand driver celebrated with a burnout, acknowledging the strong effort of his competitors.
Chase Briscoe, who finished second, pushed van Gisbergen all the way, crossing the line just 0.357 seconds behind. Briscoe later lamented a mistake in Turn 1 with four laps remaining that cost him the victory, but he praised the improving performance of his car.
Behind them, Ty Gibbs claimed third, while Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell rounded out the top five. Tyler Reddick, meanwhile, was forced to finish last after a power‑steering failure, and Alex Bowman managed to advance in the standings despite missing four races due to vertigo.
Denny Hamlin also made a notable climb, moving up the leaderboard despite a 26th‑place finish after being spun by Carson Hocevar earlier in the event. His resilience highlighted the unpredictable nature of the race.
The victory lifted van Gisbergen to 14th in the points standings, securing a provisional spot in the Chase, though the schedule now shifts to oval tracks for the remainder of the season. With no further road or street courses left, the driver will need to adapt his strategy for the upcoming ovals, beginning with the Chicagoland Speedway race on July 5.
