Laurence Manning Academy Preps for 2026 Season with New Coach and Key Players

Head coach David Rankin eyes a strong offensive return as the team readies for its season opener against Williamsburg Academy

The Laurence Manning Academy football team is entering the 2026 season with a sense of optimism and preparation. Head coach David Rankin, who took over the program this year, has praised the dedication of his players during spring practice, noting that the squad has already logged multiple scrimmages against regional opponents.

Eight offensive starters and seven defensive starters return, giving the team continuity at key positions. Among them, quarterback Grainger Powell stands out after a solid junior season in which he completed 140 of 223 passes for 1,948 yards and 13 touchdowns. Powell will once again direct the offense, this time with veteran receiver Scoop Dennis as his primary target.

Rankin highlighted the chemistry between Powell and Dennis, describing the duo as the centerpiece of a receiving corps that has shown steady improvement. "They’ve worked hard in the offseason, and their timing is sharp," Rankin said. The coach also pointed to the depth at running back and the emergence of several young linemen who could provide additional stability on both sides of the ball.

Season Opener and Conference Matchups

The regular season will begin with a high‑stakes matchup against Williamsburg Academy, the defending champions who have dominated the conference in recent years. Rankin emphasized that the game will serve as a benchmark for his team’s progress and a test of the new schemes he plans to implement.

Beyond football, the school’s athletic programs celebrated several all‑state selections. Lyza Prickelmyer, Ashley Rae Hodge and Caroline Welch earned spots on the SCISA All‑State softball team, while Josh Niswonger received All‑State baseball honors. In track and field, Lily Wellborn placed second in the javelin throw and Drew Beard finished second in the 1,600‑meter run at the Division I state meet.

Looking Ahead

With a blend of experienced returnees and promising newcomers, the Laurence Manning Academy hopes to translate its spring‑time progress into a competitive showing on the field. Coach Rankin remains focused on building on the team’s momentum, stating that the upcoming season will be a "great opportunity to showcase what we’ve built together."
