Dane Bathurst, a true freshman at the University of Oklahoma, has already turned heads by swapping his defensive‑end stance for the linebacker position.
At Carmel High School in Indiana, he recorded 65 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks, a performance that attracted interest from several Power Five programs.
Recruiters Nate Dreiling and Brent Venables were among the staff who championed his move, seeing a fit for Oklahoma’s evolving defensive scheme.
Embracing the Learning Curve
The transition has not been seamless. Bathurst is working to become more fluid, sharpening his football IQ while adapting to the faster tempo of college play.
A Network of Mentors
Veteran teammates such as Kip Lewis, Owen Heinecke and Cole Sullivan have offered guidance, while newcomers Kristan Moore, Beau Jandreau and Jacob Curry add depth to the room.
The support extends beyond the locker room; coaches continue to stress patience and development, reinforcing Bathurst’s belief that the position change will pay dividends over the long term.
Looking Ahead
With the season opening in Norman, the Sooners hope the freshman’s versatility will bolster a defense that has been seeking fresh playmakers. His ultimate goal is to contribute consistently and earn a larger role as he matures.
