After a distinguished 37‑year tenure that produced more than 400 victories, Christie Dodane has announced her retirement from coaching, bringing to a close an era that reshaped girls' basketball in Ohio.
A career defined by championships
Dodane’s journey spanned three schools — Miami East, Graham and Mechanicsburg — where she captured six conference titles and guided the 1999 Miami East squad to the state finals with a 27‑1 record. Her teams were known for disciplined play and a relentless work ethic that left an indelible mark on the sport.
Beyond the win column, Dodane cultivated relationships that extended far beyond the gym. She often spoke of the joy she found in watching her players grow, and of the pride she felt when her own daughters took the court under her guidance.
Family ties and future plans
The daughter of legendary coach Paul Hershberger, Dodane grew up surrounded by basketball and education. Her brother, Phil Dodane Jr., served as the boys' basketball coach at Mechanicsburg, while her husband, Heath Dodane, stood out as a multi‑sport athlete at Antwerp High School. Together they raised three daughters — Brooke, Jamie and Mikayla — each of whom experienced the unique blend of parental mentorship and on‑court competition.
Jamie Dodane emerged as Mechanicsburg’s all‑time leading scorer, a testament to the family’s deep roots in the game. While stepping away from the sidelines, Christie will continue teaching World Religion and Business at Mechanicsburg, a role that has broadened her perspective on global denominations and convictions and allows her to share hard‑earned lessons with a new generation of students.
In retirement, Dodane looks forward to spending more time with her family, nurturing the next chapter of her life while remaining a mentor and teacher.
