Rescue Operations Continue
Argentine soccer star Lucas Trejo is mourning the loss of his wife Yanina and their two young children, Aaron and Ainhoa, who were killed when a pair of powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela's northern coast on Wednesday evening.
The tremors, measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, rattled the states of La Guaira and nearby Caracas, collapsing homes and infrastructure and leaving nearly 1,500 dead while tens of thousands remain unaccounted for.
Rescue teams from the United States, including a specialized search‑and‑rescue unit, have pulled a mother and her nine‑month‑old baby from the rubble, and in total about 200 survivors have been extracted, though officials say roughly 51,000 people are still missing.
Venezuelan authorities, led by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, report that rescue operations are ongoing but many affected neighborhoods remain underserved, hampering efforts to reach those still trapped.
Trejo, who plays for the second‑division club Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira, expressed his grief publicly, thanking the international teams that have assisted in the search and calling for continued support for the devastated communities.
Among those still searching is Diana Sandrano, who is combing through the wreckage in La Guaira for her missing brother, hoping for a miracle amid the ruins.
