The Saint Joseph's men's basketball program announced a special addition to its roster this week, as 15-year-old Amir Ferrell signed on through the Team IMPACT initiative. The signing marks the latest collaboration between the university and the nonprofit that pairs college athletes with children facing serious illnesses.
Team IMPACT, founded in 2011, has connected more than 100,000 student-athletes with youngsters battling life‑threatening conditions. By integrating participants into practices, games, and community events, the program aims to foster resilience, socialization, and a sense of belonging for its young partners.
Amir, a resident of Darby, Pennsylvania, lives with his mother, his stepfather, and three siblings. Despite the challenges posed by Diamond-Blackfan Anemia, he enjoys video games, chess, and trips to the movies. His enthusiasm for competition and camaraderie made him a natural fit for the Hawks' roster.
Coach Steve Donahue emphasized that Amir will take part in all team practices and games, offering both a morale boost and a unique perspective on perseverance. While his on‑court contributions will be measured in spirit rather than statistics, his presence underscores the program's commitment to community outreach.
