Seventeen‑year‑old Ilia Morozov, a Russian forward, was chosen 20th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2026 NHL Draft, marking a milestone in his budding career.
Morozov arrived in Buffalo for a 16‑day stretch that combined the NHL’s pre‑draft Scouting Combine, the draft itself and the Sabres’ development camp, where he underwent a battery of physical tests and interviews.
He posted top‑10 finishes in several combine categories, drawing praise for his speed, strength and agility, while also citing veteran star Evgeni Malkin as a model for the style of play he hopes to emulate.
Beyond the rink, Morozov enjoyed a family sightseeing tour of New York City, walked the red carpet on draft night, posed for photos and even had his facial scan recorded for an upcoming NHL video game, all while sampling the local specialty of Buffalo wings.
A Draft Night to Remember
The Sabres’ development camp also provided a chance to meet Matouš Kucharcík, a 2025 draftee who will soon share a locker room with Morozov in Miami, adding a personal dimension to the youngster’s North American transition.
Looking ahead, Morozov is set to join the Miami RedHawks for the 2026‑27 season, expressing eagerness to contribute to the team’s success and to carve out his own identity in professional hockey.
