A Summer of Opportunity
The University of Denver's hockey program is set to make a splash this July as no fewer than 22 current and former players converge on a series of National Hockey League prospect development camps. These camps, which kick off in the days following the NHL Draft that recently concluded in Buffalo, New York, serve as a crucible where teams can fine‑tune prospects through on‑ice drills, strength sessions, nutrition plans and even financial workshops.
Across the league, the Pioneers will be scattered among a dozen NHL franchises, with three skaters slated for the Los Angeles Kings' camp, another trio heading to the San Jose Sharks, while the Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken each host multiple Denver alumni. Undrafted standouts have also earned invitations from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers, underscoring the program's broad appeal.
Beyond the rink, the developmental week blends skill work with community outreach; campers recently helped dedicate a new sports court at the William E. Cope Boys & Girls Club in Denver, swapping sticks for games with local youth. Such activities not only enrich the players' experience but also reinforce the team's commitment to giving back to the community.
For the players, the experience offers a preview of professional life, a chance to network with coaches and a platform to push toward the ultimate goal of NHL contracts.
