At 80, most people have retired from the hustle of daily life, but for Mike McConnell, the rink remains a second home.
A lifelong Valley resident, McConnell still laces up his skates each week to play in a recreational hockey league where he is often two or three decades older than his teammates.
A Game That Never Ages
His commitment has turned him into a quiet legend among the younger players, who watch in awe as he maneuvers the ice with a vigor that belies his years.
Next month, he will travel to Santa Rosa, California, to compete in the Snoopy Hockey Tournament, representing the 70‑and‑over division for the second consecutive year.
The event, held on the outskirts of California’s wine country, draws teams from across the West, but for McConnell it is another chance to test his skills against peers who share his passion.
“My wife says I’ve become an inspiration to family, friends, and even strangers,” McConnell told ABC15’s Cameron Polom during a recent interview. “I just love the game and the camaraderie it brings.”
Polom’s conversation uncovered the secrets behind McConnell’s endurance: a disciplined diet, regular physiotherapy, and a mindset that treats every practice as a celebration of life.
Beyond the rink, his story has resonated with many who see in him a reminder that age need not dictate ability. Local community centers have begun highlighting his journey in youth outreach programs, hoping to convey that physical activity can thrive at any age.
As the tournament approaches, McConnell remains focused on the ice, eyes set on the puck and heart set on the joy of play. His example continues to ripple through the Valley, proving that the love of sport can outlast even eight decades.
