Twelve‑year‑old Jouri Al Mashayekh is a regular on the makeshift field, his boots scuffed from countless matches, and he harbors dreams of one day turning professional. His teammate, Bushra Qaraqe, shares the same aspiration, and together they illustrate how the pitch nurtures both talent and camaraderie among the camp’s youth.
The Israeli authorities issued an order on 3 November 2025 that would prohibit the use of the pitch and its facilities, paving the way for its demolition. International advocacy, however, prompted a temporary suspension of the demolition order by the end of January 2026, buying the children a fragile reprieve.
United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) continues to champion the rights of the 457,000 refugees it serves across the occupied West Bank, including east Jerusalem. The agency provides not only educational and health services but also psychological first aid, ensuring that the pitch remains part of a broader effort to protect vulnerable children from the perils of street life and frequent security operations.
