A Growing Rift in Football Governance
A coalition of European, Asian and North American football confederations has issued a stark warning to world governing body FIFA, accusing its president Gianni Infantino of a profound breach of trust.
In a joint letter, UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF labelled the collapse of the proposed ‘Fair, Transparent and Sustainable’ (FFE) reform as a fundamental failure of judgment and deception, saying the plan was rushed without adequate consultation.
The letter, made public ahead of the 2027 election cycle, calls for an independent review of FIFA’s governance, demanding that the audit be conducted by a body free from FIFA staff and stakeholders.
While FIFA’s own correspondence admitted procedural missteps, it stopped short of labeling the proposal’s flaws as a fundamental breach, a distinction that has fueled the confederations’ resolve.
In response, the three bodies have begun exploring the creation of competitions that would operate outside FIFA’s umbrella, a move that could see UEFA stage its own tournament series if the impasse persists.
A recent meeting in Morocco, attended by only a single elected official, highlighted what the confederations describe as a lack of transparency, as key council members and member associations were excluded from the discussion.
Their message is clear: football’s leadership must serve the collective game, not the ambitions of a single individual, and any governance model must be accountable, inclusive and transparent.
