A Unified Approach to Officiating

The American Conference has teamed up with seven other Division I conferences to create a groundbreaking women’s basketball officiating alliance. The coalition, announced this week, brings together the Atlantic Coast Conference, the BIG EAST, the Atlantic 10, the Big South, the Coastal Athletic Association, the Ivy League and the Metro Conference under a single framework designed to raise the standard of game management across the sport.

At the center of the initiative is Pualani Spurlock‑Welsh, who has been named Supervisor of Officials for the alliance. With more than 18 years of experience officiating at the Division I level, Spurlock‑Welsh has presided over upwards of 75 women’s basketball games each season across multiple conferences, earning a reputation for precision and consistency.

The alliance will concentrate on recruiting qualified officials, delivering comprehensive training programs, and instituting rigorous evaluation protocols. By sharing resources and expertise, the partner conferences aim to produce a more uniform and professional officiating pool that can be deployed efficiently across the region.

A Veteran Leader at the Helm

Tim Pernetti and Debbie Williamson, both seasoned figures in collegiate basketball administration, will support Spurlock‑Welsh in shaping the alliance’s strategy. Their combined experience in operations and compliance is expected to reinforce the coalition’s mission of enhancing the student‑athlete experience and fostering competitive excellence.
