A Faith‑Driven Boot Camp
Abilene Christian University’s football program recently hosted a weekend that blended athletic preparation with a distinct spiritual focus. Coach Keith Patterson, who has led the team for several seasons, designed the camp after a year of prayerful consideration, seeking to address the hidden struggles many young athletes carry.
The initiative, called Camp T in honor of former head coach Chris Thomsen, brought together 42 participants — 40 current players, one former player and an assistant coach — for a series of activities anchored in worship and reflection.
On July 24‑25, the group gathered at a local venue where worship services culminated in the baptism of all 42 members, a public profession of faith that underscored the camp’s central theme of transformation.
Partnering with Beltway Park Church’s men’s ministry, the camp introduced “Fire Teams,” small groups of five to eight players paired with one or two volunteer mentors. These sessions combined biblical teaching with honest conversations about identity, purpose and the pressures of collegiate competition.
Players such as Marcos Davila and Makenzie McGill spoke openly about how the experience helped them confront personal shortcomings, replace resentment with trust in God, and envision a future where their faith informs their relationships and performance on the field.
The emotional moments did not end with the baptism; during a worship service, several participants raised their hands in prayer, and mentors who shared reflections highlighted the profound impact of the weekend on their spiritual walk.
Beyond the weekend, the mentors have pledged to continue discipling the athletes throughout the upcoming season, promising a sustained emphasis on spiritual growth alongside athletic development.
