SuperCup to launch new season
The first ever EuroLeague Basketball SuperCup is set to light up Abu Dhabi on September 18 and 19, with the finals taking place at the state‑of‑the‑art Etihad Arena on Yas Island.
The tournament is the result of a partnership between EuroLeague Basketball and the emirate’s Department of Culture and Tourism, a collaboration that was underscored by His Excellency Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, who highlighted the event’s role in expanding the sport’s global footprint and giving young athletes a chance to shine on an international stage.
Four elite clubs — Olympiacos Piraeus, Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul, Real Madrid and Dubai Basketball — will contest the knockout stage, which includes semifinal matches, a third‑place playoff and a championship final.
The SuperCup also marks the official kickoff of the 2026‑27 EuroLeague season, a campaign that will see the league grow from 18 to 20 participating teams and offer up to eight long‑term franchises for the 2027‑28 season, with more than 20 formal proposals already on the table.
Interest from potential owners in cities such as Rome, Berlin and London reflects the league’s ambition to broaden its reach, while the strategic commercial partner IMG helped broker the deal that builds on Abu Dhabi’s recent experience hosting the 2025 Final Four.
