The Adirondack Thunder, Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have jointly announced that the 2027 Capital District Mayor's Cup will be staged at the Harding Mazzotti Arena in Glens Falls on Saturday, January 23, 2027. The double‑header will feature the women's teams at 3 p.m. followed by the men's squads at 6 p.m., marking a new chapter for the rivalry.
A New Era for Women's Hockey
For the first time the women's programs of Union and RPI will meet on the ice in Glens Falls, expanding the tradition that has long centered on the men's matchup. The women's rivalry dates back to 2000, and this game will showcase the growing prominence of collegiate women's hockey in the region.
The men's series has a storied past, having been held at the venue — originally the Glens Falls Civic Center — in 1998 and 1999. RPI holds a 57‑52‑12 edge in the all‑time men's series, yet Union has captured ten of the thirteen Mayor's Cup encounters, underscoring the competitive balance.
The upcoming games will showcase the depth of hockey heritage in the Capital Region, drawing on decades of play that began with the first men's contest in 1924.
Jeff Mead, President of the Adirondack Thunder, said he is excited to host the event and welcome the two colleges. Union's Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin highlighted the significance of the Mayor's Cup as a celebration of tradition, while RPI's Dr. Kristie Bowers noted the growing passion of Adirondack Thunder fans and the sport's regional growth.
Tickets for both contests will go on sale July 1 through the arena's box office and website, giving supporters ample time to secure seats for what promises to be a memorable weekend of collegiate hockey.
