A Homecoming for a Coaching Legend
Colby College announced today that Adrienne Shibles will take the reins of the women’s basketball program, bringing to the Mules a career that spans nearly three decades of elite coaching at some of the nation’s most respected liberal‑arts institutions.
Shibles arrives after stints that include leading Bowdoin to 281 victories, eleven NCAA Tournament berths and eight Sweet Sixteen appearances, while at Dartmouth and Swarthmore she earned a reputation for turning programs into contenders and capturing multiple Coach of the Year honors, including the 2019 WBCA Division III National Coach of the Year award.
Connecting Past and Future
Her journey in the sport began with an early apprenticeship at Colby, where she first honed her recruiting acumen and player development philosophy, and later saw her mentor the 2021 USA Basketball Women’s Under‑16 National Team before returning to the college as a head coach at Bates and, more recently, as a sought‑after speaker at girls’ basketball camps across the state.
Amanda DeMartino, Colby’s Athletics Director, praised Shibles for her proven ability to attract top talent and cultivate championship‑level cultures, noting that her deep ties to Maine’s basketball community make her a natural fit for the college’s aspirations.
Beyond the win‑loss column, Shibles is celebrated for mentoring student‑athletes both on and off the court, a commitment reflected in her induction into the Maine Basketball and Sports Halls of Fame and her ongoing work organizing youth clinics that aim to grow the next generation of players.
The appointment marks a full‑circle moment for a coach who once served as an assistant at Colby, a period that laid the groundwork for a career defined by transformation, excellence and a steadfast dedication to the liberal‑arts ideal of developing whole persons.
