A Summer of Sport in Swampscott
A new adult men’s flag football league has begun in Swampscott, drawing 41 players into a season of Tuesday night competition.
The league is a collaboration between longtime resident Tom Layte and the Swampscott Recreation Department, which is also offering adult softball and women’s flag football as part of its summer programming.
Games are held on Tuesday evenings at Blocksidge Field, with each of the four teams scheduled to play six regular‑season matchups before the August playoffs.
Layte’s squad, nicknamed “The Swamp,” opened its campaign with a 32‑18 loss, a result that surprised participants who had never played organized flag football before.
Communitywide Participation
Beyond the flag football league, more than 230 adults are expected to take part in the town’s summer sports offerings, creating a vibrant atmosphere of recreation and camaraderie.
Recreation Director Charlotte Daher de Garcia highlighted the initiative’s role in strengthening community ties, noting that shared athletic experiences foster lasting connections among residents.
The upcoming playoffs will bring together all four teams in August, capping a season that blends competition with neighborhood spirit.
