Statewide crackdown on high school athletics
The Alabama High School Athletic Association announced a sweeping set of sanctions that have placed the Pell City football program on restrictive probation and barred it from the postseason. The move follows a series of investigations that uncovered improper recruiting activity, prompting the association to act decisively to preserve competitive integrity.
Head coach Jake Ganus, who previously guided Moody to a 5A state championship before taking the helm at Pell City, will be barred from the sidelines for the entire season. In addition, any athlete implicated in the violations will be declared permanently ineligible to represent Pell City High School in future competitions.
The penalties extend beyond Pell City, as the AHSAA also levied sanctions on Mary G. Montgomery and its head coach Zach Golson earlier this week. Both cases involved photographic evidence of players celebrating with cigars after a victory, a practice the association has deemed a violation of sportsmanship codes.
These actions underscore a growing intolerance for rule infractions within Alabama’s high school sports landscape. By imposing postseason bans, coach suspensions, and permanent player ineligibility, the association signals a zero‑tolerance stance that could reshape how programs approach recruitment and compliance moving forward.
