A New Chapter for Cornell Basketball
AK Okereke, a former Cornell basketball standout, has inked a two‑way NBA contract with the Los Angeles Lakers after the 2026 NBA Draft, marking the latest step in a trajectory that began as a walk‑on and culminated in All‑Ivy League recognition.
At Cornell, Okereke blossomed into a versatile floor general, averaging 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game while earning Ivy League Player of the Week after a 24‑point performance against California. He capped his college tenure with a career‑high 30‑point outing versus Ivy champion Yale and posted a 23.5‑point average at the Ivy Madness tournament.
Following his Ivy success, Okereke transferred to Vanderbilt where he appeared in 36 games, contributing 9.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest. His move to the Lakers comes alongside fellow Cornell alumnus Chris Manon, who also signed a two‑way deal and became the first Cornellian to see NBA action in more than a decade.
A Legacy of Ivy League NBA Alumni
Okereke is slated to feature for the Lakers in the upcoming NBA Summer League, a platform that could showcase the Ivy League’s growing influence on professional basketball. The signing adds to a storied pipeline: over the years, Cornell has produced five NBA players, including Nat Militzok, Ed Peterson, Gene Berce, Jeff Foote, Lee Morton, George Farley and Louis Jordan, and more recently Bryan Colangelo, now a top executive with the Toronto Raptors.
The Lakers’ decision reflects both Okereke’s statistical upside and the broader narrative of Ivy League talent breaking into the NBA’s competitive landscape, a trend that Cornell’s athletic department hopes will continue to attract scouts and fans alike.
