Akbar Waheed III arrives in Amherst with a reputation that precedes him. Ranked No. 39 nationally as a small forward by ESPN, he amassed over 1,000 points during his prep career at Georgetown Prep, where he was celebrated for a high basketball IQ and a knack for shooting and playmaking.
His game is defined by versatility. Waheed describes himself as adaptable, comfortable playing multiple positions and initiating offense in a fluid, position‑less system. That flexibility, he says, will allow him to contribute in whatever role the Bonnies need.
A Family Affair on the Court
Basketball runs in the Waheed family. His father, a veteran scout and coach with more than 25 years of experience in the NBA and at several collegiate programs, has joined the Bonnies’ staff, creating a rare father‑son coaching partnership. The elder Waheed’s background includes stints scouting for the Brooklyn Nets and Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as coaching at Georgetown, Boston College, Hofstra and Niagara.
The younger Waheed’s sister also made her mark, ranking 17th all‑time in scoring at Holy Cross, underscoring a household where competition and coaching are everyday conversations. This environment, he notes, has shaped his perspective and work ethic.
Head coach Mike MacDonald welcomed the duo, highlighting how the new coaching relationship adds depth to the program’s culture. The elder Waheed’s extensive scouting background is expected to enrich the team’s strategic approach, while the younger Waheed brings fresh energy as a player.
Early summer workouts revealed a tight‑knit group of incoming players who bonded quickly. Waheed emphasized the camaraderie, noting that the newcomers gelled fast and are eager to support one another on and off the court.
Beyond the locker room, Waheed expressed gratitude for the community’s enthusiasm for Bonnies basketball. He highlighted the vibrant atmosphere, the passionate crowd, and the program’s commitment to excellence as factors that made the opportunity irresistible.
