A Community in Mourning
A 34‑year‑old travel baseball coach, Jorge Fonseca, was shot and killed outside a barbershop on the east side of Birmingham, Alabama, after an argument escalated into violence.
Witnesses say Fonseca and his family were inside the shop when he got into a dispute with another man; the suspect drew a firearm and fired outside the premises, and Fonseca was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police reports indicate the suspect fled the area but was taken into custody a short time later at a nearby location, bringing a swift end to a chaotic morning that left neighbors stunned.
Fonseca had been preparing to travel with his wife and two children to Panama City, Florida, for a travel baseball World Series tournament, a trip that was meant to showcase his team’s talent on a national stage.
Remembering Coach George
Troy Whetstone, who met Fonseca at a batting cage in 2022 and quickly became a close friend, described the coach as a man with a big heart who devoted countless hours to mentoring young athletes.
Whetstone, who now leads the nonprofit organization Wow Factor 205, recalled how Fonseca’s enthusiasm inspired players, many of whom called him “Coach George” on the field.
The news of Fonseca’s death has hit his players hard; several of them have taken to social media to share memories and express disbelief, while local leagues have begun planning ways to honor his legacy.
A Tribute Is Planned
In response, Whetstone is organizing a community tribute event that will bring together players, families, and friends to celebrate Fonseca’s impact on the sport and on the lives he touched.
