Alabama Coach Kalen DeBoer Calls for Revamped Run Game Ahead of 2026 Season

Emphasis on rushing attack after a lackluster 2025 performance, with key player transformations and a season‑opening matchup against East Carolina

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer opened the 2026 preseason with a clear directive: the Crimson Tide must establish a reliable rushing attack. He argues that a successful run game not only simplifies play‑calling but also shields the team’s inexperienced quarterbacks from early pressure.

A New Emphasis on the Ground Game

In 2025 Alabama’s rushing offense ranked second‑worst in the SEC, managing just 104.13 yards per game and a paltry 3.35 yards per carry. The production was further hampered by an inconsistent backfield, with no running back reaching 46 yards per game and only one averaging more than 4 yards per carry.

DeBoer has identified the run game as the foundation for a more balanced offense. He believes that when the ground attack clicks, the playbook expands and the quarterback can operate with greater confidence, reducing the need for hurried throws.

This offseason the program has poured resources into improving run blocking and reshaping personnel. The coaching staff highlighted the physical transformations of returning backs Kevin Riley and Daniel Hill, both of whom have added muscle and appear faster in training drills.

Freshman recruit EJ Crowell, a five‑star prospect, is also a focal point of the revamped attack. After recovering from a lower‑leg injury, Crowell is expected to contribute depth and explosiveness once he is fully cleared.

The schedule will test the new approach right away. Alabama opens the 2026 season on September 5 at 11 a.m. CT against East Carolina, a game that will be broadcast on ABC and serve as the first real gauge of the revamped rushing scheme.
