Alabama State entered its second week of fall camp after a scrimmage on August 8, a period marked by intense drills and tactical evaluations.
Urgency Issue Prompts Practice Trim
Coach Eddie Robinson Jr. cut the second practice period short, citing a perceived lack of urgency from the squad and a need to refocus the group before the season opener.
Multiple athletes were absent from the field, including Mitchell Robinson Jr., T’Marrion Phillips, Myles Richardson, Jaylan Jarrett, Te’Sean Smoot, Josiah Hixon, and Ashton Ashford, with some limited to stretching or medical rehab.
Among those making progress, safety Zaquan Patterson, who transferred from Miami, earned first‑team reps on Tuesday, signaling his integration into the defensive scheme.
Cornerback Battle Takes Shape
The cornerback competition is currently led by Zach Williams, Mekhi Butler, Greg Mangle and Trent Henry, each vying for starting duties in a secondary that seeks stability.
During a "backed up" period, quarterback Andrew Body connected with receiver Kareem Keye for a notable play, while Aaron Frye later delivered a strike to Eric Horn Jr., highlighting offensive spark.
The team is now gearing up for its season opener against Southern in Birmingham, a game scheduled for 18 days from now that will test the early lessons learned in camp.
With a mix of returning veterans and fresh faces, Alabama State hopes to translate the camp’s lessons into a more urgent, cohesive performance on the field.
