A Calculated Approach to NIL
Alabama’s football program has doubled down on its approach to name, image and likeness deals, insisting that it will not chase the highest financial offers that some rival schools are flashing.
General Manager Courtney Morgan told Touchdown Alabama Magazine that the staff will pull the plug on official visits the moment a prospect’s terms cannot be met, recalling a case last year when a top recruit was advised to stay home because the Crimson Tide could not match the competing package.
Justin Smith, a five‑star prospect, revealed that Alabama walked away from his pledge after seeing offers that far exceeded what the Crimson Tide could provide, illustrating the program’s willingness to bow out gracefully when the numbers no longer align with its philosophy.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer, who took over the program recently, has emphasized that Alabama will continue to recruit at an elite level, but the administration is prepared to let go of high‑priced commitments without compromising its long‑term vision.
The stance reflects a broader strategy that values sustainable scholarship management over short‑term splash, a stance Morgan says is meant to protect both the players and the program’s competitiveness for years to come.
