The National Football Foundation (NFF) has unveiled the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, a list that blends established powerhouses with emerging legends. The announcement, made public in early June, highlights 80 players and nine coaches from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, alongside 99 players and 39 coaches from the divisional and NAIA levels.
A crowded field of candidates
Among the names that stand out are two former LSU standouts, Alan Faneca and Patrick Peterson, each of whom left an indelible mark on college football before carving out distinguished careers in the NFL. Their inclusion reflects not only individual excellence but also the lasting impact of Louisiana’s football tradition on the national stage.
Faneca, a New Orleans native, earned consensus First‑Team All‑American honors in 1997 and became the first LSU player ever to be a finalist for the Outland Trophy. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the first round of the 1998 draft, where he spent nine seasons before moving on to the New York Jets and the Arizona Cardinals. His professional résumé includes nine Pro Bowl appearances, eight All‑Pro selections, and a Super Bowl XL championship, culminating in his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 9, 2021.
Patrick Peterson’s collegiate career was equally spectacular. In 2010 he was named a unanimous First‑Team All‑American and made history as the first LSU player to capture both the Bednarik and Jim Thorpe awards. Drafted fifth overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2011, Peterson later contributed to the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers before announcing his retirement on April 11, 2025.
Looking ahead to the ceremony
The NFF has scheduled the announcement of the 2027 Hall of Fame class for January 2027, with the official induction ceremony set for December 2027 during the NFF Annual Awards Dinner. This event will bring together players, coaches, and fans to celebrate a lineage of talent that stretches from the collegiate gridiron to the brightest stages of professional football.
The upcoming class also underscores the breadth of talent across the NCAA’s various divisions, with representatives from the NAIA and lower‑division programs receiving well‑deserved recognition. As the selection process unfolds, the football community eagerly anticipates the stories that will be told onstage, honoring a new generation of legends who have shaped the sport’s rich tapestry.
