A Historic Triumph
The Cook Inlet Soccer Club’s 2009 Girls Elite side made history this week by capturing Alaska’s first ever US Youth Soccer National Championship in the under‑17 division, a triumph that will be remembered as a watershed moment for the state’s soccer landscape.
After years of traveling beyond the 49th parallel to find competitive fixtures, the squad entered the national tournament as underdogs, yet they quickly proved they belonged among the country’s elite.
Their path to the final took them through hard‑fought victories over teams from Arkansas, West Virginia and Washington, setting the stage for a showdown in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The Final Match
Playing in sweltering heat and humidity, the Alaskan side fell behind 2‑1 in the dying minutes, but a surge of resolve sparked a dramatic turnaround.
With a precise left‑footed strike, Jesenia Cortes found the back of the net to level the score, and moments later the winning goal sealed a 3‑2 victory that sent the crowd into celebration.
Head coach Rich Bailey, who has guided the group since their early youth days, praised the players’ perseverance, noting that their unity and belief were the catalysts for the comeback.
The championship not only crowns the team as the most successful in Alaska soccer history, but also signals a new era for the Cook Inlet community, which now boasts a national champion program.
As the summer wanes, the players will disperse to their respective high schools, carrying the title of national champions back to classrooms across the state.
