Community Celebrates the World Cup
The City of Albuquerque, in partnership with New Mexico United, is rolling out a series of free World Cup watch parties across the city’s neighborhoods, turning local parks and community centers into vibrant soccer hubs.
The festivities kick off with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City, a game that has sparked enthusiasm among fans who are gathering to cheer together under the summer sun.
Local breweries and distilleries are joining the celebration, with Starr Brothers Brewing Company pledging to donate $1 from every beer sold during the events to support youth soccer programs, while Hollow Spirits Distillery is serving custom cocktails and themed food creations inspired by each match.
Carlos Tenorio II, communications manager for New Mexico United, said the World Cup’s arrival in the region has ignited a palpable excitement, and Coach Eddie Hernandez noted that the tournament is inspiring young players to sport jerseys of their favorite international teams.
The ‘Summer of Soccer’ schedule includes an intramural‑style tournament called Copa de Plaza, along with food trucks, live music and plenty of lawn chairs, blankets and snacks brought by attendees, all offered at no cost.
Beyond the games, the initiative underscores a community‑wide effort to use sport as a catalyst for youth development, with proceeds from drinks and merchandise funneled back into local soccer leagues.
