Alex Bowman, the veteran driver who has been a cornerstone of Hendrick Motorsports’ lineup, announced this week that he has agreed to a one‑year contract extension that will keep him on the roster through the 2027 season.
The deal also marks the beginning of the end of his full‑time racing career; Bowman said he will step away from competition after 2027, opening a seat that the team plans to fill beginning in 2028.
Team owner Rick Hendrick praised Bowman’s professionalism and the legacy he has built, noting that the driver has captured eight Cup Series victories and sits sixth in the organization’s all‑time appearance list with 307 races.
Beyond his on‑track achievements, Bowman has served as the primary face of Ally Financial’s NASCAR program, a partnership that the company’s chief marketing officer Andrea Brimmer described as a perfect embodiment of the firm’s values.
With Bowman’s retirement on the horizon, attention has turned to rising star Connor Zilisch, currently 34th in the points standings and viewed by many as one of the sport’s most promising talents. Hendrick Motorsports has indicated that Zilisch is among the candidates under consideration for the 2028 seat.
Zilisch, who drives for Trackhouse Racing this season, has already drawn praise for his rapid ascent and could bring a fresh direction to the team’s driver roster. The move would also continue a trend of younger drivers stepping into historic organizations as they look to the future.
