From the Senior Legion’s dominant run in the Gopher Classic to the Junior Legion’s competitive outings, the city’s teams combined talent with an unprecedented level of community backing.
Community Investment Fuels the Momentum
The recent upgrades at Knute Nelson Memorial Park, including a fresh turf infield, expanded grandstands and a modern press box, were made possible through a blend of public funding and private sponsorship. These improvements not only enhance the fan experience but also provide a professional environment that attracts higher‑level competition.
The Senior Legion squad captured the prestigious Gopher Classic on July 13, 2026, defeating a field of 80 Midwest teams, while the Junior Legion Black group traveled to Minnetonka and Sioux Falls for competitive tournaments alongside the Red squad. Although an opening‑round loss in the sub‑state bracket sent the Senior team to a winner‑take‑all final, Brainerd ultimately claimed the state title; nevertheless, Alexandria Black’s runner‑up finish in the Division I junior state tournament underscored the program’s rising competitiveness.
Coaches Jacob Munsch and Lee Backhaus repeatedly highlighted the role of community backing and collective belief, noting that the players’ confidence grew as the town’s support deepened. Their emphasis on teamwork and resilience has become a cornerstone of the program’s identity.

With bids secured to host the 2028 Division I senior Legion tournament and the 2029 Division I junior Legion tournament, Alexandria is poised to build on this momentum.
