The Alfred‑Almond baseball program has been honored with the 2026 Allegany County Umpires Association Sportsmanship Award, a recognition that reflects the team’s consistent demonstration of respect, fair play and composure throughout the season.
How the Award Is Determined
Umpires evaluated every game across five distinct categories — coaches, players, spectators, game start and mechanics — and compiled the scores to identify the program that best embodied the spirit of sportsmanship.
Both the varsity squad and the modified team enjoyed successful campaigns, with the varsity finishing the spring at an 11‑6 record and the modified side completing an undefeated schedule.
Season Highlights
The varsity team broke through in the sectional playoffs, securing a 3‑1 victory over Lima Christian before ultimately falling to Fillmore, the eventual Section V champion and Class D state runner‑up.
Meanwhile, the modified team remained unbeaten, a testament to the depth of talent and disciplined play cultivated at the junior level.
Beyond the win‑loss column, the award underscores a broader philosophy that baseball, at its best, teaches grace in victory and dignity in defeat, values that resonate with players, coaches and the wider community.
The recognition also highlights the role of the Allegany County Umpires Association in fostering a culture of accountability and mutual respect across local high school athletics.
