Alicia Govannicci has just been elevated to associate head coach of Hofstra University’s field hockey program, a move that underscores the rapid rise of a coach who has already reshaped the team’s fortunes in just a short span.
A New Chapter at Hofstra
Since taking the reins, Govannicci has engineered a turnaround that saw the Pride climb from a modest four victories in 2024 to a nine‑win season in 2025, culminating in the program’s first CAA Championship appearance since 2015.
The impact extends beyond the win column; five members of the squad earned All‑CAA honors or placed on the CAA All‑Rookie Team, and senior forward Teresa Karoff was recognized with NFHCA All‑Mideast Region Second Team accolades after topping the conference in goals and points.
Her ability to attract talent and maximize performance was evident early in her career, when she led Rider University to a 17‑win campaign and was crowned 2024 NEC Coach of the Year.
A Coaching Journey
During her two‑year stint at Rider, Govannicci also guided the Broncs to three NEC Championship titles, three regular‑season crowns and the 2013 MAAC regular‑season championship, while coaching NEC Offensive Player of the Year Olivia Machiavelli and Midfielder of the Year Lyric Scott in 2024.
Beyond the sidelines, she holds a master’s degree in sport administration from Central Michigan University, earned in 2020, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and elementary education from Rider, where she herself was a four‑year starter and two‑time captain.
Her playing pedigree includes three MAAC regular‑season titles, three NEC championships and an All‑MAAC First Team nod in 2013, as well as All‑NEC Second Team honors in 2011 and 2012.
With a blend of strategic acumen, player development and academic grounding, Govannicci is poised to lead Hofstra’s field hockey program to even greater heights in the coming seasons.
