The Taylor Allderdice boys soccer team captured headlines last season with a historic run to the PIAA Class 3A semifinals, a feat all the more impressive given the program’s modest facilities.
Instead of a private stadium, the Dragons practice at Schenley Oval Sportsplex in Schenley Park, sharing the fields with runners, dog walkers and other city athletes, a reality that shapes their daily routine.
Players typically walk or drive 15 to 20 minutes from school to reach the pitch, a logistical hurdle that Coach David Thyberg embraces as part of the team’s identity.
'Our environment forces us to be adaptable,' Thyberg said, noting that the urban setting has fostered a tight‑knit culture among teammates who have grown up together in the neighborhood.
A Season of Transition
The 2025 postseason saw the Dragons defeat WPIAL champions such as West Allegheny, proving that success does not hinge on state‑of‑the‑art venues but on preparation and perseverance.
Looking ahead, the 2026 season introduces four returning seniors alongside a wave of freshmen competing for varsity spots, while the team navigates its new at‑large, independent status with optimism.
With Athletic Director Ira Clemens overseeing logistics and alumni Huxley Lackner and John Krysinsky offering mentorship, the Dragons aim to translate their city‑born resilience into another deep playoff run.
