The sudden loss of Adam Massman, a 17‑year‑old quarterback and defensive back from Alma Center, Wisconsin, sent shockwaves through the high school football community this weekend.
At Eau Claire Memorial’s recent matchup against Chippewa Falls, the home team took the field wearing helmets marked with the number 4, a tribute that turned a routine game into a moving memorial.
Chase Schultz, a player on the Memorial squad, said the team viewed football as a family and felt a duty to extend that support to athletes from other schools.
Jack Modl, a center on the team, added that high school football represents a pivotal chapter in many youngsters’ lives, making the loss especially poignant.
The Old Abe Football Club collected donations during the game, with proceeds going directly to the Massman family, a effort overseen by treasurer Robin Schultz who wanted to recognize Adam’s impact in his community.
The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association called on all high school programs across the state to observe a moment of silence before their games this weekend, ensuring that Adam’s memory is shared statewide.
