An alumni‑driven memorial fund has been launched to create a bronze statue that will stand on the campus of Central Michigan University, honoring Dave Keilitz, the longtime baseball coach and athletic director who passed away in July 2023 at the age of 83.
A Legendary Career
Keilitz arrived at CMU in 1971 and spent 14 seasons at the helm of the baseball program, compiling a 456‑203 record and delivering a winning season every year. His teams captured four Mid‑American Conference championships and earned six trips to the NCAA tournament, cementing his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in the school’s history.
From Coach to Administrator
After stepping down from the dugout, Keilitz transitioned to athletic administration, serving as CMU’s director of athletics for a decade before assuming the role of executive director of the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1994, a position he held for two decades. His influence extended far beyond the university, shaping the broader landscape of collegiate baseball.
Community Response
The fundraising effort has drawn support from a wide network of former players and colleagues. Perk Weisenburger, who captained the 1980 CMU squad, and former major‑league pitcher Kevin Tapani have been among those leading the charge. More than 20 alumni from Keilitz’s era have already pledged contributions at a recent celebration of his life.
A Permanent Tribute
Sculptor J. Brett Grill has been commissioned to design the statue, which will be installed on the university’s grounds. Any surplus donations will be directed to the newly created Dave & Sue Keilitz Family Endowment, ensuring ongoing support for the CMU baseball program.
The memorial not only celebrates Keilitz’s on‑field achievements but also reflects the deep gratitude of a community that benefited from his leadership, mentorship and dedication to the sport.
