A Community Celebration
June 13 marked the first ever alumni baseball game for Hickman County High School, held at the newly christened Mike Smithson Field, a tribute to the coach who steered the program from 1997 through 2009.
That evening, 18 former Bulldogs took the field, ranging from the class of 1984 to the graduating class of 2026, to raise funds for a new outfield fence through a silent auction featuring Bulldogs apparel, Nashville Sounds tickets, and historic memorabilia.
The centerpiece of the night was a ragball showdown split into two squads, one led by Smithson and the other by current head coach Cody Douchane. Smithson’s team surged ahead early, highlighted by a first‑inning home run from Hayden Dearman, and ultimately secured an 8‑3 victory.
Speaking after the game, Smithson expressed his joy at seeing familiar faces and praised the program’s growth, while Douchane voiced gratitude for the veteran’s confidence and emphasized the vital role of community backing in building a sustainable culture.
Organizers noted that all proceeds from the auction will go toward the fence project, a tangible symbol of the Bulldogs’ renewed momentum, and both coaches agreed that the event underscored the enduring power of mentorship and local support.
A Legacy Rekindled
Mike Smithson’s tenure left an indelible mark on Hickman County baseball, shaping a generation of players who now return as alumni ambassadors. His presence at the fundraiser not only honored his past contributions but also reinforced a bridge between past and present, ensuring the program’s foundation remains strong.
Looking forward, Douchane said he is eager to see the team evolve, believing that moments like this game illustrate what it truly means to coach at the high school level.
