Alvernia Field Hockey Breaks Decade‑Long Drought with 2‑0 Win Over Susquehanna

Coach Cody Savitsky’s squad secures first win of the season, setting the stage for a home opener against Wilkes

Alvernia University’s field hockey team secured a 2‑0 road win over Susquehanna University, snapping a 16‑year winless streak against the River Hawks and capturing the program’s first victory of the season.

First Victory in a Decade

Coach Cody Savitsky celebrated his first win as head coach, highlighting the contributions of senior forward Ava Michael, who recorded a goal and an assist, and Alessandra Stevens, whose 36th‑minute strike extended the lead to 2‑0.

The opening goal arrived early in the first quarter when Michael finished a play set up by Kelsy McClintock, giving the Golden Wolves an early cushion that they would not relinquish.

Despite a surge of offensive pressure from Susquehanna, including three penalty corners and multiple shots in the first four minutes of the second half, Alvernia’s defense, anchored by seven saves from Jazmin Mayfield, held firm and prevented any response.

The Golden Wolves are now set to host Wilkes University on September 9 at 7 p.m., eager to build on the momentum generated by their decisive triumph.
