A New Era for Amarillo Sports
The Amarillo Civic Center unveiled a brand‑new basketball court this week, a $167,000 project that replaces a worn‑out surface that had become unusable.
City officials say the fresh floor is already generating buzz, with officials reporting a surge of inquiries from organizers eager to book the venue.
Funding the Future
The renovation was financed through the hotel occupancy tax, a revenue stream that spared local taxpayers from direct funding.
Christopher Post, the civic center’s general manager, noted that the old court’s condition had forced the city to decline several events, underscoring the urgency of the upgrade.
The venue, which currently hosts the Harlem Globetrotters, aims to expand its basketball calendar and attract a broader range of tournaments and community games.
Leaders anticipate that the upgraded facility could double the number of bookings, a milestone that would significantly increase revenue for the city.
Although detailed revenue projections are not yet available, the expectation is that the new court will help achieve a 100% increase in event bookings.
