A rocky start on the road
American University opened its season with a narrow 2-1 loss to UMBC on Sunday, leaving the Eagles at 0-2 after two straight defeats. The match, played on the road, highlighted both the team's attacking intent and the defensive lapses that have defined the early schedule.
Senior forward Bella Miller was the bright spot for the visitors, finding the net with her third career goal and converting her first penalty kick. Her effort gave the Eagles a brief lead before UMBC rallied in the second half.
Despite out‑shooting UMBC 14 to 18, the Eagles managed only six shots on goal compared with eight for the Retrievers. Junior midfielder Maddie Hurowitz led the team with four attempts, while Bella Miller added three shots, two of which were on target.
Goals and near‑misses
UMBC struck first in the 21st minute when Olivia Nardone headed in a corner kick. Brooke Clagett doubled the lead later in the match, securing a 2-1 final score. Bella Miller and junior Mia De Villegas‑Decker both struck the crossbar in the 47th minute, and Miller’s penalty in the 68th minute brought the Eagles within one before the Retrievers held on.
Freshman goalkeeper Riley Molbury played the full 90 minutes, recording six saves to keep the Eagles competitive. Goalie Lauren Sanders remained on the bench for this contest.
The team will look to rebound when they travel to Richmond for their third consecutive road game on Thursday, August 20. The upcoming match offers a chance to reset the early season narrative and build momentum.
