A Community Rallies on the Ice
On a bright Sunday in August 2025, the Northtown Center in Amherst became the stage for a novel sporting event: a charity hockey game pitting Amherst police officers against the town’s volunteer fire department. The match marked the first Police versus Fire contest in the town’s history and drew a crowd eager to support a cause close to home.
The game was organized in memory of Danny Bechtel, a 16‑year‑old who died in a dirt bike accident earlier that summer. Danny, the son of Amherst Police Officer Mark Bechtel, had distinguished himself on his high school hockey team and through numerous travel programs across Western New York, where his love for the sport was evident to teammates and coaches alike.
Remembering Danny Bechtel
Lt. John Michael Murphy of the Amherst Police Department, who spearheaded the fundraiser, explained that the event aimed to celebrate Danny’s enthusiasm for hockey while generating financial support for his family. “We wanted to turn grief into something positive for the community,” Murphy said, noting the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the fire service.
Beyond the on‑ice competition, the day featured door prizes, basket raffles, a 50/50 draw, and a free open skate that allowed fans of all ages to step onto the rink. Attendees included numerous Amherst police personnel and members of the local volunteer fire department, underscoring the broad community involvement.
The proceeds from the raffles and skate entries were earmarked for the Bechtel family, providing a tangible gesture of solidarity. Organizers hope the event will become an annual tradition, reinforcing the town’s commitment to honoring its youth while fostering unity among its first‑responders.
