A New Chapter for the Bears
Amier Ali, a 6‑foot‑8 guard/forward, is set to join the California men’s basketball team for the 2026‑27 season, adding a rare combination of size, shooting and defensive versatility to a roster that has been on an upward trajectory.
Ali’s college journey began at Mississippi State, where as a sophomore he posted a season‑high 16 points, and continued at Arizona State, where he averaged 5.5 points and 3.1 rebounds as a freshman before exploding for 18 points against No. 12 Texas Tech. His EYBL performance in 2023‑24 saw him average 17.1 points per game, underscoring his scoring potential.
Coach Madsen’s Praise
Coach Mark Madsen has described Ali as one of the most exciting wings in the transfer portal, highlighting his ability to stretch the floor and guard multiple positions. “His size and shooting make him a nightmare for opponents, and his defensive instincts only add to the mix,” Madsen said.
The Cal program’s recent success — marked by its most successful season in a decade during 2025‑26 — provides a fertile environment for Ali to make an immediate impact. The team finished the season with a notable win streak that propelled them back into national conversation.
A Versatile Threat
Standing at 6‑foot‑8, Ali can operate on the wing, in the post or as a stretch four, giving the Bears flexibility in lineup constructions. His defensive skill set allows him to switch onto guards and forwards, a trait that Madsen believes will elevate the team’s overall defensive rating.
Ali will be one of eight newcomers joining the Bears for the 2026‑27 campaign, a group that the coaching staff hopes will blend seamlessly with returning players and push the program to new heights.
