A strategic hire for a program with championship pedigree
Haverford College has tapped Andre Gibbs as its new head coach for the women's basketball program, entrusting the former University of Pennsylvania assistant with the task of sustaining a tradition that includes three Centennial Conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
Gibbs arrives after a stint at Penn where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, contributing to a 17‑10 record in the 2025‑26 season and helping the program secure a berth in the Ivy League Tournament in each of his first two years.
During his time in Philadelphia, Gibbs played a pivotal role in the development of standout players such as Katie Collins and Mataya Gayle, both of whom flourished under his guidance and later earned recognition for their collegiate performances.
His recruiting acumen was evident in the class he helped assemble, which featured future stars like Jordan Obi, Stina Almqvist, Kalaya Hall and Amari Davis, all of whom credit Gibbs for shaping their collegiate pathways.
Gibbs' coaching journey began as a volunteer assistant at Bryn Mawr College, followed by head coaching positions at Utah State and Queens University of Charlotte, before returning to the Philadelphia area to join Haverford.
A graduate of Philadelphia University, now Thomas Jefferson University, Gibbs played under Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee, amassing 1,400 points and 350 assists during his collegiate career, and earned Freshman All‑American and CACC Rookie of the Year honors in 2012‑13.
The college community anticipates that Gibbs' blend of recruiting expertise, player development, and deep ties to the region will reinforce Haverford's competitive edge in the Centennial Conference and beyond.
