The Utah Mammoth announced this week that Andrew Agozzino will join the Tucson Roadrunners as an assistant coach, stepping into the role vacated by Zack Stortini, who has taken a head‑coaching position in New Mexico.
A veteran’s new chapter
Agozzino, who hung up his skates after a 14‑year career in the American Hockey League, announced his retirement earlier this month. The move marks the end of a playing stint that spanned three continents and included more than 800 AHL games.
During his playing days Agozzino became a fixture among the AHL’s all‑time leaders, ranking 29th in games played and cracking the league’s top‑50 list for goals, assists and points. He recorded 284 goals, 378 assists and 662 total points, and celebrated eight 20‑goal seasons.
AHL legacy and All‑Star recognition
Agozzino’s contributions were recognized with invitations to the AHL All‑Star Classic in 2013 and 2019, underscoring his standing as one of the league’s most respected forwards of his generation.
Stortini’s departure to coach in New Mexico creates a clear opening for Agozzino to bring his extensive on‑ice experience to the Roadrunners’ bench. The team’s management expressed confidence that his deep knowledge of the league will help develop the next wave of talent.
The hiring reflects a broader trend of former AHL stars moving into coaching roles, a pathway that leverages decades of professional insight while shaping the future of the sport at the affiliate level.
